Lauryn Hill Remixes Her Own Remix
Did Lauryn Hill just remix a remix of a mix that is her mix? Yes, yes she did.
This past Tuesday, Lauryn performed at Harlem’s Apollo Theater where she added her own bars and style over Drake’s newest song, “Nice For What.”
Now we’ve all heard “Nice For What” but even if you haven’t, you at least know who Drake is. This new song samples Lauryn’s Hot-100 topping hit “Ex-Factor” coming off her 1998 classic “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. Feeling old yet??
During her performance, she begins by saying “see this is ‘Ex-Factor’, he took the sample, my shit is classic, here’s an example..”, before she started spitting bars relating to her illustrious career over the new beat.
As a fan, all I could do was smile while she was rapping, because you could feel that “Nice For What” attitude spew out of her with every lyric so I wasn't mad at it at all. One thing I can say is that she knows who she is and what she contributed musically, because she was unapologetic on that stage. But hey, when you create masterpieces you can do things like this..
Many celebrities were also feeling Lauryn’s performance, including Swizz Beatz. He posted a video on Instagram, with the caption saying “Miss Hill had the Apollo on fire last night”. He also encouraged her and Drake to get together and put out an official remix. Now I don’t want to get my hopes up, but we will see what summer 2018 holds!
This isn’t the end of the Lauryn Hill train. This performance came shortly after Hill announced her Miseducation 20th Anniversary Tour. I’m guessing it’s time for me to go broke once again, but I think it may be worth it this time.
The tour is scheduled to kick off July 8 in Bristow, Virginia. She is also set to headline the Pitchfork Music Festival.
