J.Cole's "Album of The Year" Is the Freestyle of the Summer
Christmas came early for hip hop fans today! J. Cole, only a day after sending out a tweet proclaiming that he would “murder” all beats sent to him, has released a new track titled Album of The Year (Freestyle). On the track J. Cole mercilessly rhymes over Nas’ classic “Oochie Wally” beat. The freestyle, which clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, displays a more braggadocious side of Cole than fans are used to. At one point Cole asserts that KOD is 2018’s best album and even goes as far as saying he is the greatest MC since The Notorious B.I.G. His flow is relentless as he asserts himself as a top tier MC who stands in opposition of his less skilled competition who he describes as a “weak sea of rappers.” Always the radical, Cole even finds time to discuss the disparities in media coverage of addiction between racial groups in America. The ending bars are used to hype up fans for the upcoming projects from Dreamville which include efforts from fellow artists J.I.D. and Bas.
If this freestyle is any indication, the KOD tour is definitely a must see. Cole also dropped a video and in the description teases The Offseason Mixtape which will serve as a prelude to The Fall Off, a project that was introduced at the end of KOD. This is Cole at his most aggressive, making a play for the summer. With multiple projects coming out, a nationwide tour, and the first annual installment of Dreamville Festival taking place in North Carolina in mid September, J. Cole and his Dreamville squad are looking primed to shut down the summer!
